What’s New in the On Cloudsurfer 3?
The Cloudsurfer has always been built around a smooth running experience. For the Cloudsurfer 3, On has reworked several parts of the shoe to make the ride softer, more cushioned, and more fluid from one stride into the next.
New SURREAL™ Superfoam
One of the biggest updates is the introduction of SURREAL™ superfoam. On designed the new foam to create a softer feel underfoot while adding rebound and shock absorption for everyday mileage.
Paired with the Cloudsurfer 3’s increased stack height, the result is a shoe that puts cushioning and comfort at the center of the experience rather than trying to feel especially firm or aggressive.
Updated CloudTec® Phase Geometry
The Cloudsurfer 3 continues to use CloudTec® Phase, but On updated the geometry and orientation of the Cloud elements underfoot. The system is designed to compress progressively as you move through your stride, helping create a smoother transition from landing through toe-off.
In practical terms, this is a shoe built around flow. The goal is less about a dramatic sensation underfoot and more about making everyday miles feel consistently smooth.
A Higher, More Cushioned Platform
With 45 mm of stack under the heel and 37 mm under the forefoot, the Cloudsurfer 3 has an 8 mm heel-to-toe drop and a substantial amount of cushioning beneath the foot.
Despite that cushioning, there is no plate in the Cloudsurfer 3. It remains a flexible daily-running option rather than becoming a plated workout or racing shoe.
Updated Engineered-Knit Upper
On also redesigned the upper with an engineered knit intended to provide a breathable, secure fit. Revised zoning, texture, and detailing give the Cloudsurfer 3 a more refined look while keeping the focus on everyday running comfort.
What Does the On Cloudsurfer 3 Feel Like?
The simplest way to understand the Cloudsurfer 3 is soft rather than firm, and smooth rather than aggressive.
On positions the Cloudsurfer 3 as a shoe for comfortably moving through daily road miles. The SURREAL™ foam provides the cushioning, while CloudTec® Phase is designed to help the shoe roll naturally from heel to toe.
That makes the Cloudsurfer 3 particularly interesting for runners who care more about a comfortable, fluid ride than a highly responsive or race-oriented feel.
Shoe feel
Think Soft, Smooth, and Everyday
The Cloudsurfer 3 is designed for daily road mileage. If you want a shoe that feels cushioned and fluid through easy and steady running, this is where the Cloudsurfer 3 makes the most sense.
Where the Cloudsurfer 3 Fits in Your Rotation
Rather than comparing the Cloudsurfer 3 directly against one specific shoe, it is more useful to look at the role it is designed to fill in a running rotation.
A Good Option For
- Easy road runs
- Daily training miles
- Recovery-oriented running
- Steady aerobic runs
- Treadmill running
- Walking and everyday movement
- Runners who prefer softer cushioning underfoot
Probably Not Your First Choice For
- Fast workouts where you want a firm or highly responsive ride
- Racing if you prefer a plated performance shoe
- Technical trail running
- Runners specifically looking for a minimal or low-stack experience
For many runners, the Cloudsurfer 3 could serve as the comfortable daily shoe you reach for between harder workouts and races.
Who Should Try the On Cloudsurfer 3?
The Cloudsurfer 3 is worth trying if you are looking for a neutral daily trainer and prioritize comfort, cushioning, and smooth transitions.
It may be particularly appealing to runners who:
- Prefer a soft feel beneath the foot
- Spend a lot of time running easy or steady aerobic mileage
- Want a comfortable everyday road shoe without a plate
- Want one shoe that can handle running, treadmill miles, and walking
- Have enjoyed the Cloudsurfer franchise and want a more cushioned update
Shoe preference is personal, especially when cushioning and fit are involved. Trying the Cloudsurfer 3 next to other daily trainers is the best way to decide whether its particular combination of softness and rolling transition works for you.

Why the Cloudsurfer 3 Is Launching Through Run-Specialty Stores
The Cloudsurfer 3 is starting its launch with participating run-specialty retailers before broader availability. For runners, that means the first place to experience the shoe is somewhere you can actually put it on your feet.
That matters with a shoe built so heavily around feel. Stack height and foam names can tell you part of the story, but they cannot tell you whether the cushioning feels right for you, how the upper fits your foot, or how the shoe compares with the trainers you already wear.
Stop by Athletic Annex in Carmel, Fishers, or Nora and our team can help you try the Cloudsurfer 3 alongside other options and find the shoe that makes the most sense for your miles.
