The origin of Athletic Annex traces back to the 1980 New York City Marathon, where two Indianapolis runners in their late 30s, Attorney Bob Weddle and Nelson Steele, met in the lobby of the Sheraton Center. Bonding over their shared passion for running, they became running buddies. Within a year, they began considering the idea of opening a running store on the North side of Indianapolis. This idea emerged because at that time, there was only one other running store in town located on the South side in Greenwood.
