Monon Trail Guide (Indianapolis)
Parking, route options, access points, and runner tips
The Monon Trail is more than just one of the most popular places to run in and around Indianapolis — it’s a living piece of the city’s history that’s been reimagined for modern movement. What’s now a smooth, runner-friendly greenway was once an active railroad corridor operated by the Monon Railroad, a line that connected Indianapolis to communities throughout central Indiana. When the trains stopped running, the corridor didn’t disappear — it evolved.
Today, the Monon connects neighborhoods, downtown access points, and northern suburbs in a way few routes can. For runners, that means predictable footing, flexible access points, and the ability to build just about any run you want — from a short weekday shakeout to a structured workout or a long, uninterrupted weekend effort. Its gentle grades (a legacy of its railroad past) make it especially well-suited for steady miles and progression runs.
