About On
Olivier Bernhard was a Swiss Ironman champion, and like most athletes, he wanted a shoe that felt like running on clouds. So he began experimenting by gluing pieces of garden hose to the outsole of a regular sneaker—he wanted to know how this shape could provide a different type of cushioning.
The resulting prototype was visually unappealing, but it gave the sensation of running on air. He presented what would eventually become CloudTec, On's proprietary cushioning technology, to an established sneaker brand, only to have it rejected.
In 2010, together with his friends and fellow avid runners David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti, he established On Holding AG. In March of the same year, On's redesigned prototypes bagged the ISPO BrandNew Award, a prestigious recognition given to innovative sports and outdoor startups. Bernhard and team were now ready to produce on a much larger scale.
Fast forward to today, On has become the fastest-growing athletic shoe brand in the US. What started in the Swiss Alps now has a presence in major markets around the world.
