Important Strava setting

Make Sure Strava Can See the Full Segment

Your activity map must show the complete segment, including its start and finish. If your Strava privacy settings hide the beginning or end of the route, Strava may not recognize your effort and it will not count toward the competition.

What Is the Athletic Annex Ice Cream League?

The Ice Cream League is a local spin on the Strava segment challenge format. Instead of competing during one traditional race, runners and walkers have from August 1 through August 22 to complete short designated segments as many times as they would like.

This is the summer follow-up to the Athletic Annex Burrito League. The concept is simple: choose a location, complete its official segment on foot, upload the effort to Strava, and keep coming back throughout the challenge.

Speed is not the main objective. The leaderboard is based on the number of eligible segment completions recorded during the event window, so runners and walkers of different paces can participate.

Community challenge

Run, Walk, Repeat

You do not need to be the fastest athlete on the segment. The goal is to participate consistently, explore a local route, and have some fun along the way.

How to Participate

  1. Create or log into your Strava account.
  2. Choose one or more of the four official Ice Cream League segments.
  3. Run or walk the complete segment on foot.
  4. Record your activity using Strava or a GPS device connected to Strava.
  5. Upload the activity on the same day it was completed.
  6. Confirm that the effort appears on the correct Strava segment leaderboard.
  7. Repeat the segment as many times as you would like before August 22 at 9:00 PM Eastern.

Participation is completely free. You will need a Strava account and a phone, watch, or GPS device capable of recording and uploading the activity.

How to Make Sure Your Efforts Count

Strava must recognize the full official segment for an effort to count. Before beginning the challenge, review your Strava privacy settings and confirm that the start and finish of the route will remain visible.

  • Complete the full segment. Starting late or ending early may prevent Strava from recognizing the effort.
  • Keep the start and finish visible. Privacy settings that hide either end of the segment may keep the effort off the leaderboard.
  • Upload the activity the same day. Delayed or saved activity uploads will not count toward the challenge.
  • Complete the segment on foot. Bike rides, scooters, and other forms of transportation are not eligible.
  • Check the leaderboard. After uploading, open the segment and verify that your effort was recorded.

Strava note

Check Before You Repeat

Athletic Annex cannot count an effort that Strava does not recognize. Confirm that your first attempt appears correctly before building up additional completions.

Ice Cream League Prizes

Each of the four Ice Cream League locations will have three Athletic Annex gift-card winners. That creates 12 prize-winning positions across Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, and Nora.

Prizes at each location

Top Three Eligible Competitors

  • First place: $100 Athletic Annex gift card
  • Second place: $75 Athletic Annex gift card
  • Third place: $50 Athletic Annex gift card

A participant may win only one Athletic Annex gift card during the Ice Cream League. Participants may appear on more than one segment leaderboard, but duplicate prize positions will be adjusted after the challenge closes so the next eligible competitor can move into a winning position.

Additional ice cream gift cards, pop-up prizes, and random giveaways may be announced during the challenge. Follow Athletic Annex on Instagram for the latest additions and opportunities.

Pop-Up Runs, Free Ice Cream, and Random Giveaways

Part of the fun of the Ice Cream League is not knowing exactly what may pop up next. Athletic Annex may announce group runs, in-store activities, free ice cream opportunities, leaderboard updates, and additional prizes throughout the challenge.

Pop-up details will be shared through the Athletic Annex Instagram account, so follow along during the challenge to find out when and where the next opportunity will happen.

Social Media Giveaways

Random prizes may also be awarded to participants who complete at least one official segment, post about it on Instagram, and tag @athleticannex.

Posting on Instagram is not required to qualify for the main segment leaderboard prizes. It is only required for social-media-specific giveaways.

Follow the Leaderboards

Trent Vickrey will help monitor the segment leaderboards and determine the final winners. Follow Trent on Strava to make it easier to stay connected with leaderboard updates throughout the challenge.

Ice Cream League Safety Guidelines

The Ice Cream League is meant to be fun. No prize or leaderboard position is more important than your safety or the safety of other people using the road, trail, or sidewalk.

  • Remain aware of vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, and other trail users.
  • Follow traffic signals, crossings, and posted rules.
  • Do not stop suddenly or make unsafe turns to improve a segment result.
  • Choose a time of day when the route and weather conditions are appropriate.
  • Run or walk at a pace that is safe and comfortable for you.
  • Avoid blocking sidewalks, trails, parking areas, or business entrances.

Local reminder

Share the Route

These segments use public roads, sidewalks, and trails. Be courteous, give others room, and remember that the route remains open to the rest of the community.
