Why Monumental Is a Big Deal in Indianapolis

The CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon Weekend is one of the biggest running weekends in the Midwest. The event brings marathoners, half marathoners, 5K runners, walkers, spectators, volunteers, and local businesses into downtown Indianapolis for a race weekend that feels fast, organized, and genuinely local.

Monumental is the rare race that works for almost everyone: the marathoner chasing a serious time, the first-time half marathoner looking for a well-supported course, the 5K runner who wants to be part of the downtown energy, and the family or friend group with different goals but one shared race weekend.

Race Distances and Course Maps

Monumental offers three race-day distances: the full marathon, half marathon, and 5K. The marathon and half marathon start together at 8:00 AM, while the 5K starts at 8:40 AM.

Race Distance Start Time Good Fit For
CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon 26.2 miles 8:00 AM Boston qualifying attempts, marathon PRs, first marathons, and experienced distance runners
CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Half Marathon 13.1 miles 8:00 AM Fall half marathon goals, first-time half marathoners, and runners who want a fast downtown course
CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental 5K 3.1 miles 8:40 AM Newer runners, walkers, families, race-weekend supporters, and anyone looking for a shorter downtown Indy race

Course maps and race-morning resources are available through the official Monumental website. Review those maps before race day so you know the start area, finish area, gear check location, spectator flow, and any downtown traffic restrictions.

Course Overview: Fast, Flat, and Downtown

Monumental is known for fast, flat courses that run through downtown Indianapolis and nearby historic neighborhoods and Cultural Districts. That combination makes it a strong choice for runners chasing a PR, marathoners looking for a Boston qualifying time, and first-time half marathoners or marathoners who want a well-supported city race.

The early miles can feel exciting and crowded, especially with the marathon and half marathon starting together. Use the first few miles to settle in, avoid weaving, and run your own race. Monumental rewards patience: the course is fast, but the best race day usually comes from staying controlled early and saving your energy for the later miles.

  • Marathoners: Have your pacing and fueling plan ready before race week. A flat course is great for rhythm, but it also makes it easy to go out too fast.
  • Half marathoners: The course is a strong fall PR opportunity, especially if you can stay relaxed through the opening miles.
  • 5K runners and walkers: The 5K is a great way to experience Monumental weekend without committing to a long-distance race.

Local tip

Give Yourself Downtown Time

Even if you know Indianapolis well, Monumental race morning is not a normal downtown morning. Check the traffic restriction map, choose your parking plan ahead of time, and leave more time than you think you need to get from your car or hotel to the start area.

Expo and Packet Pickup

The Monumental Health & Fitness Expo and Packet Pickup takes place at the Indiana Convention Center on Thursday, November 5 and Friday, November 6. This is where runners pick up their bib, shirt, race materials, and official gear check bag.

If you cannot pick up your own packet, someone else may pick it up for you if they bring the required check-in pass with your assigned bib number and a copy of your government-issued photo ID. Digital or printed copies are acceptable according to the official FAQ.

Race Day Packet Will Call may be available as a purchased add-on, but quantities are limited and subject to availability. Unless you have purchased that option, plan to pick up your packet at the expo.

Race-Morning Logistics: Parking, Gear Check, and the Start

Downtown races are smoother when you remove decisions before race morning. Know where you are parking, where gear check is located, how you are getting to your assigned wave, and where you will meet family or friends after the finish.

  • Arrive early. Gear check opens at 6:30 AM, and the marathon and half marathon begin at 8:00 AM. Give yourself enough time to park, use restrooms, drop your bag, warm up, and find your wave.
  • Use the official gear check bag. Participants receive a clear gear check bag at the expo. The official event schedule says that bag must be used for gear check.
  • Review the race-morning map. The official resources page includes course maps, race-morning navigation details, parking information, and traffic restriction guidance.
  • Plan your post-race meetup. Cell service can get crowded around large events. Choose a specific landmark, street corner, hotel lobby, or post-race area before the race starts.

Important note

Use Official Race Communication for Final Logistics

Course maps, parking guidance, construction notes, gear check details, and traffic restrictions can change. Before race weekend, review the official Monumental resources page and the race emails sent to participants.

Fueling, Hydration, and On-Course Support

The official FAQ notes that water will be available at all aid stations for the marathon, half marathon, and 5K. Electrolytes are offered at every other aid station for the marathon and half marathon, plus the start and finish lines. Energy gels are also listed for the marathon course and half marathon course.

That is helpful support, but your best plan is still the one you practice before race day. If you are running the marathon or half marathon, test your gels, chews, drink mix, caffeine, and timing during long runs. Race day is not the time to find out a new gel does not sit well.

Gear note

November Race Days Reward Planning

Indianapolis weather in November can be cold, mild, windy, rainy, or all of the above. Have your race-day shoes, socks, layers, gloves, hat, and fueling plan ready before expo weekend. If something feels off two weeks out, stop by Athletic Annex so there is still time to fix it.

What to Wear for Monumental

For Monumental, think in layers. You may be standing around before the start, then warming up quickly once you are moving. Many runners use throwaway layers near the start, then race in lighter apparel once they settle into pace.

  • Shoes: Race in shoes you have already tested. For the marathon, make sure your race-day pair has enough miles to feel familiar but not so many that the cushioning feels flat.
  • Socks: Avoid anything brand new. A small sock issue can become a big race-day problem over 13.1 or 26.2 miles.
  • Layers: Bring options for cold, wind, and rain. Gloves and a lightweight hat can make a big difference before the start.
  • Fuel storage: Decide ahead of time whether you will carry gels in shorts pockets, a belt, a handheld, or a race vest.

Who Monumental Is Perfect For

Monumental is a strong fit for a wide range of runners and walkers because the race weekend has multiple distances, a fast downtown course, strong race support, and the energy of a major city event.

  • Marathoners chasing a Boston qualifying time
  • Runners targeting a fall PR in the marathon or half marathon
  • First-time marathoners who want a well-supported course
  • First-time half marathoners looking for a big-race feel
  • 5K runners and walkers who want to be part of race weekend
  • Families or friend groups with mixed distances and goals
  • Local runners who want a major race experience without traveling far

Make It a Weekend in Indianapolis

One of the best parts of Monumental is that it starts and finishes downtown. If you are coming from outside Indianapolis, staying downtown can simplify the weekend by keeping you close to the expo, start area, finish area, restaurants, hotels, and post-race plans.

If you are local, treat the downtown logistics like part of the race plan. Check road closures before leaving home, know where you are parking, and avoid making race-morning decisions in traffic.

  • Before the race: Pick up your packet, walk the expo, finalize your gear, and eat familiar food.
  • Race morning: Arrive early, use the official race-morning map, and keep your warmup simple.
  • After the race: Choose a meetup spot, change into dry layers if needed, and enjoy the post-race celebration.

How to Register for Monumental Marathon Weekend

Expo registration may be available starting Thursday, November 5, subject to availability.

If you are planning to run, do not wait too long. Race pricing, availability, deadline-based perks, and registration options can change as race day gets closer.
